This $89 Godox ring light also controls your smartphone

Godox has announced a new full-color LED ring light with a twist. The Litemons SR20R connects to your smartphone over Bluetooth, so the buttons on the light can control your phone’s camera.

Design

Unlike a traditional round ring light, the SR20R is square. It’s shaped to fit around a smartphone or gimbal camera and measures 11.4 by 8.7 inches (290 by 220 mm), with a depth of 1.6 inches (40 mm). Even without a phone or camera attached, it weighs nearly 22 oz (623 g).

A 1/4″-20 adapter with a locking ring holds a smartphone or small camera inside the frame. Additional 1/4″-20 threads let you put the SR20R on a tripod or light stand. Fold-out legs also let it stand on a flat surface.

Photometrics

Color temperature ranges from 2800K to 6500K. CRI and TLCI are both rated above 96, so skin tones and colors in your scene should reproduce accurately.

Ring lights work best close to your subject, and the SR20R puts out up to 1,510 lux at 1.6 feet (0.5 m). Full RGB output lets you dial in any hue you want. Godox also includes 14 built-in lighting effects. Among them are cop car and lightning presets, along with a flickering broken bulb.

Controls

Once it’s paired over Bluetooth, buttons on the light handle capture and focus on your phone. They can also switch cameras and toggle modes. With compatible phones, the dial even adjusts zoom. A small screen on the back shows your current settings.

Power

A built-in 4,800 mAh battery runs the light for up to 90 minutes at 100% brightness. Recharging takes around 140 minutes. You can also keep shooting while it charges over USB-C.

Other features

Three cold shoe mounts across the top give you room for a microphone and other accessories. In the box, you’ll find a phone clip and a charging cable. Godox also sells an optional mount for action cameras.

What we think

The Litemons SR20R looks like a lot of light for the money. It’s designed around smartphones and gimbal cameras like the DJI Osmo Pocket line, though it’ll also work with action cameras and smaller mirrorless bodies.

Beyond the classic ring light look, the SR20R doubles as a handheld rig for your device. Being able to run your phone’s camera from the light’s own controls is a smart touch. At this price, it should be popular with creators who need a light they can take anywhere.

Pricing and availability

The Godox Litemons SR20R retails for $89 and is available to preorder now.
